Connect Charter Family Weekly Update
December 5 - December 9
This Week's Highlights
- A reminder that student-led conferences are December 8th (evening) and 9th (day). We invite you to come to our school to see learning as it is lived, talk with the many teachers who your child interacts with and engage in the activities we have planned to encourage belonging in our community.
- Report cards will be accessible on Monday, December 5 at 4:00. Watch for an email with instructions. Report cards are only available for a limited time so please download or print them for your records.
- There is no school on December 9th due to our student-led conferences.
- Career Fair! Grade 8 and 9 students wrapped up their Career Month with the Career Fair. Thank you to the many volunteers who came in to share their job profiles and life experiences with our students. Your messages generated a lot of interest and questions and planted the seeds for future ambition.
- Junior Achievement! Our students in grades 5-9 engaged in the Junior Achievement program this week, garnering transferable skills in work readiness, understandings about financial health, and learning about entrepreneurship. Grade 4 sessions will happen after the winter break.
- Grade 4-8: book your in-person conference! Conference Manager opens on December 5th at 4:00 p.m. and closes on December 8th at 12:00 p.m. (steps provided below).
- Grade 9: meetings are focused on high school transition. These will be individual and virtual. Teachers will provide the link. There are a few opportunities on Friday between 11:00-1:00 for in-person conversation. Teachers will provide the link. Use conference manager to book (steps provided below). Conference Manger opens on December 5th at 4:00 p.m.

About the Report Card:
Connect Charter values timely feedback for families in relation to student progress. Report cards are one of the many ways we communicate with parents about student achievement. Connect Charter provides families with a report card three times a school year.
On each report card you will be provided with information about your child’s progress in citizenship, core subjects (math, science, language arts and social studies), physical education and electives.
Please note, for semestered courses and courses that have fewer required minutes, grades will only be provided in terms 2 and 3 (examples of these courses include: art; music; outdoor education; health and creative technology).
We strongly encourage families to come to student-led conferences this year. The benefits of this opportunity include:
-a lived experience of how and what your child is learning;
-opportunity to talk with a variety of teachers that teach your child;
-seeing a variety of learning environments at the school;
-engaging with school-based activities that are hosted by the school and school council
Tips for Reading Report Cards with Children:
This is a snapshot of your child’s learning. They are growing and developing over time in their learning both socially and academically.
1. Providing a positive experience when reviewing the report card is important to open dialogue with your child. Consider yourself in their shoes; how would you like a conversation about your progress to be approached?
2. Ask your child what they are most proud of as you read the comments.
3. Ask your child if there are any assignments, courses or activities that really excited them this term.
4. Ask your child what is tricky at school? How do they get help with this?
5. Consider the areas for growth in the report card; what does your child want to bring attention to?
6. If there is confusion related to achievement, consider looking to the seesaw learning management to provide understanding and plan to attend conferences to learn more about progress and to have the opportunity to touch base with the teachers.
7. Leave the conversation by saying what you are proud of with your child’s report card.
