Connect Charter Family Weekly Update

September 19th-22nd

This Week's Highlights

Grade 6 students hiking at fall camp.

Parent-teacher conferences will be in-person on Thursday, October 6th from 4:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.

Parent-teacher conferences on Friday, October 7th, from 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. will be either in person or virtual through Google Meet. To support us in providing the right number of online vs. in-person time-slots, we ask that parents/guardians fill in the three-question survey found in the body of the email for this weekly update.

Families can sign up for conferences on September 22nd.

Connect Charter School sports teams have started practices with the volleyball and cross country running teams. We are excited to provide opportunities for teams to compete in partnership with the Calgary Alternative Athletic Association, which includes a variety of school boards across the city. Other sports include Badminton, Basketball as well as Track and Field. Connect Charter is proud of our sports teams, the Lasers. We would like to thank our staff who have stepped forward as coaches. We are also thankful to our parent community as we were able to replace school uniforms using fundraising money.

Indoor Recess Opportunities
Health restrictions and recommendations during the pandemic resulted in all students being outdoors for both morning and lunchtime recess. As a school that upholds Outdoor Education, Connect Charter values the research related to the many benefits of outdoor recess. At the same time, we appreciate that students have a variety of interests that can be explored during non-instructional time at school. To better understand student perspectives, the leadership team will be hosting student-focus groups with the goal of creating a balance of indoor opportunities alongside outdoor recess. We hope to develop clear guidelines informed by research, staff perspectives, and student feedback by the end of September. We look forward to sharing our plans with families and encourage conversations at home with children about parent perspectives on this matter

In an effort to encourage parent participation, we have made some changes to regular School Council and Parent Society meetings:
– Option to attend in-person at the school or online via Google Meet
– Consolidated agenda (no breaks between meetings)
– Meeting will open with Principal’s Update on school happenings
– Administration update will include a report from Chris Gilmore, Superintendent (occasional or when required)
– School Council meeting on events, fundraising and parent engagement will follow
– Parent Society update will close out the meeting with information on Casino, Raffle and report on expenditures

Please join us at the school, from your living room, or just login to Google Meet while you’re making dinner. All parents are de-facto members of School Council and Parent Society – we welcome your participation!

School Council and Parent Society Minutes and Agendas can be found here.

Fun Lunch will be back & we’re looking forward to a great year of lunches & snacks!
Fun Lunch will begin in October and every single order you place is a contribution to our school’s fundraising goals. Fun Lunch raises approximately $28k per school year!
Fun Lunch is completely run by parent volunteers and if you would like to get involved please email us at [email protected].
Thank you,

When a suspected outbreak is identified and reported to AHS Public Health, AHS Public Health staff will provide information and recommendations to assist schools in preventing further spread of illness. Learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic have informed the development of the AHS Guide for Outbreak Prevention and Control in Schools to assist school divisions in dealing with suspected outbreaks of any kind in a quick and effective manner. This resource outlines the reporting process, initial infection prevention, management and control measures, and the role of AHS Public Health staff in responding to school outbreaks.

Have a wonderful week, Connect!
