April 22, 2022 Parent Update

Good afternoon Connect parents;

Happy Earth Day…let’s take care of this little blue planet…it’s the only one we’ve got!  The Connect Run Club showed appreciation for the earth, if not the unseasonably chilly temperature, with a Friday morning run to the Weaselhead bridge. Run club meets every Friday morning at 7:30am (Thursdays when Friday is a non-instructional day) and all students are welcome to join us.

A late blast of winter and a chilly forecast for Thursday led us to the unfortunate decision to reschedule the Connect Our Community event. Although we have penciled in Thursday May 19th as the new date, we also realize that since Friday May 20th is a PD day followed by a long weekend we may be excluding some families who are taking advantage of the extra day to get out of the city. We will finalize plans next week and let all of you know the confirmed date.

Connect staff participated in a rare Monday Professional Learning day at the FEC this week, working with our outdoor education experts and a representative from Friends of Kananaskis to develop activities for the upcoming spring camps in June. We also used the opportunity to begin discussions on what additional field experiences can be developed to replace some of the grade specific multi-day trips that were such an important part of our program prior to the pandemic. There are many moving parts and logistics to those activities and details will be shared with the school community as they become more solidified.

Our commitment to developing comprehensive outdoor and experiential education programs has been underscored by assigning Evan Ferguson to the FEC on a full time basis until the end of the school year. In addition to supporting teachers and students with programs at the FEC, he will also work closely with grade teams to establish activities that have strong curricular connections and that align with our charter goals and vision of ‘preparing students as extraordinary citizens’. Gavin Peat, a former Connect director and instructor at the University of Calgary, is stepping into the role of FEC site coordinator to oversee all operations, maintenance, and planning beginning in early June. Ken Boe will be assigned full time to phys ed until the end of June.

Admissions Lottery NOW OPEN

The admissions lottery for admission to grade 4 in August 2023 is now open. Information on the lottery process may be found at connectcharter.ca/registration-and-admissions/#lottery

If you have a child whom you wish to be admitted to grade 4 in August 2023 and who has an older sibling currently enrolled at Connect, their name must still be entered in the lottery, however the filtering will automatically place siblings at the top of the admissions list.

From April 15 to May 31, 2022, any parents may enter their grade 2 child’s name into the lottery through a link on the Connect website at www.connectcharter.ca

The lottery will take place in June 2022 and parents will be notified of their child’s placement. Please share the lottery information with others who may be considering Connect as their choice of school for the critical middle years.
