April 14, 2022 Parent Update

Good afternoon Connect parents;

The photo above is a classic Calgary spring image. These 43 intrepid soccer players from grades 4 to 7 braved windchill temperatures of -15C for a 7:15am practice…so Canadian…so Connect! The team will continue practicing each Wednesday morning leading up to a full day tournament on May 25th. The badminton squad has also been practicing diligently and participated in their first tournament on Wednesday. To round out the Connect sports news, we hosted a mini basketball tournament on Tuesday that was chock full of enthusiasm and high energy. A huge thanks to all our teacher coaches who have persevered to provide opportunities for students to pursue their passion for sports.

NOTE: THE SCHOOL IS CLOSED FRIDAY APRIL 15TH FOR GOOD FRIDAY AND MONDAY APRIL 18TH AS STAFF WILL BE ON A PROFESSIONAL LEARNING DAY AT THE FEC.

Connect Our Community – Thursday April 21  3:30-7:30pm

The  Connect Our Community event is only a week away and ConferenceManager in PowerSchool will be open at 4pm Thursday April 14th for families to sign up for a one hour block: 3:30-4:30, 4:30-5:30, 5:30-6:30, or 6:30-7:30. Each one hour segment will begin with a brief welcoming presentation from school administration in the gym. Families will then be provided with an overview of activities both inside and outside the school building. Weather permitting, most teachers and many information tables will be available outside during the afternoon. A reminder that the Connect Our Community event is not another version of a student-led or parent-teacher conference, but is an opportunity for us to welcome parents back into the school as we hopefully emerge from the pandemic. We also acknowledge that the coronavirus and the Omicron variant are still very much with us and not everybody feels comfortable being in populated spaces. The intent of our staggered sign up times is to spread out people with a maximum of 150 families being on site at any one time. Several grade 9 students will be highly visible and can assist with any questions you may have upon arrival. We are looking forward to connecting with many of you for the first time and to reconnecting with those whom we have not seen in 2+ years.

Spring Camps

Planning continues for each pod to have a two-day, one-night experience at the FEC in June. While  enrichment fees cover the costs of fall camps, electives, complementary course supplies, technology, school supplies, and more, the costs of spring camps are paid through an additional fee per student. In the past, the fees for the additional trips have been based on destination, duration, support and resources required, and program costs for each trip, resulting in spring camp fees ranging from $180 for the grade 4 trip to Crowsnest to $300 for the grade 5 and 7 trip to Fort Steele. As all spring trips this June will go to the FEC, we have determined that the per student cost will be $125 and will include transportation, program cost, accommodation, and food. This represents a cost that is subsidized in the amount of $25 per student from the enrichment budget. The spring camp fee will be accessible and can be paid through PowerSchool as of today. The spring camp schedule will be available in next week’s parent update.

2022-23 Calendar Amendment

The Board of Directors approved two amendments to the 2022-2023 Connect calendar. The staggered entry for students has been moved from August 18-19 to August 22-23. This change allows for students to start on a Monday-Tuesday rather than a Thursday-Friday and will make for a smoother start to the year. The second amendment is to add May 31st back onto the calendar. Somehow this day got deleted off the last version but has now been returned to its rightful spot. With these adjustments Connect’s timetable still exceeds slightly the hours of instruction required by Alberta Education. Please visit the calendar at:

Admissions Lottery Update for 2023-24

Students entering grade 4 in August 2022 will be the last to be admitted from the waitlist. The waitlist will still be in effect for grades 5 through 9 until this cohort reaches grade 9, at which time the current waitlist will be completely eliminated. Students entering grade 4 in August of 2023, and who are therefore currently in grade 2, will enter a lottery to determine admission order. Information on the lottery process may be found at connectcharter.ca/registration-and-admissions/#lottery

If you have a child whom you wish to be admitted to grade 4 in August 2023 and who has an older sibling currently enrolled at Connect, their name must still be entered in the lottery, however the filtering will automatically place siblings at the top of the admissions list.

From April 15 to May 31, 2022, any parents may enter their grade 2 child’s name into the lottery through a link on the Connect website at www.connectcharter.ca

The lottery will take place in June 2022 and parents will be notified of their child’s placement.

Note: our intake year is grade 4 only.

The lottery process is applicable only for grade 4 entry each year.

Parent Society and School Council

Parent Society AGM  Tuesday April 19, 2022 at 6:30pm

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 19 when we will hold our Annual General Meeting for the Connect Charter Parent Society. We are in need of new directors for the 2022/2023 school year, and welcome parents or guardians from all grade levels. In the next two years, we will have six directors moving on from Connect, so we especially appreciate representation from younger grade levels.

Notice of 2022 AGM and Minutes of 2021 AGM for the Parent Society

connectcharter.ca/wp-content/uploads/2022/04/April-2021-AGM-Minutes-Parent-Society.pdf

The Parent Society is responsible for organizing all AGLC related fundraising (casinos, raffles) which accounts for approximately $45k every 18-24 months. These funds are used to purchase items for educational enrichment for all Connect students. Volunteering for Parent Society is a minimal time commitment, but has a huge impact on our school. Please consider getting involved. The Connect Charter Parent Society (CCPS) serves as a separate entity in parallel with the Connect Charter School Council at the direction of the Connect Charter School Board.

Anyone who is interested is welcome to contact Mary Jensen, Parent Society President, at [email protected]
