April 8, 2022 Parent Update

Good afternoon Connect parents;

This week quickly picked up speed as Connect became a hub of active learning once again. It has been wonderful to reconnect with our students and we are looking forward to the opportunity of inviting families to the school for the Connecting Our Community open house on Thursday April 21st from 3:30-7:30pm. We have been separated as a school community for far too long and this will be an important first step towards reconnecting families with the school. Here are some important details:

  • We will be asking families to sign up for a one hour block in order to try and avoid bottlenecks and large crowds at peak times. Conference manager will open for sign up at 4:00pm on Thursday April 14th and will remain accessible until April 21st.
  • Each one hour block will begin with a brief slide presentation by administration in the gym. Student work will be evident throughout the school and there will be displays on bulletin boards and in classrooms. Teachers will be moving throughout the school when they are not in their classrooms.
  • You will have the opportunity to meet your child’s teachers in person, tour the school, visit the information booths that will be set up in the gym, and participate in activities that are fun, engaging, and designed to help reconnect our community as the pandemic becomes less severe and we are able to interact once again.
  • Grade 9 students will be identifiable as tour guides and hosts, prepared to provide direction and show people around the campus – we are very mindful that a large number of parents have never set foot inside the building due to the pandemic.
  • This event is NOT another version of a student-led conference, parent-teacher meeting, or school orientation. If you wish to arrange a meeting with your child’s teacher to discuss their progress, please do so by emailing the teacher outside of this event.
  • For those who are unable to join us in person, we will be capturing video and photo highlights of the day that will be available on the website.

Electives

Electives are a go for Term 3! Thank you to all of those who completed the elective preference forms promptly and properly. Elective class lists will be posted around the school on Monday by lunchtime, and students will begin their electives Tuesday afternoon. Homeroom teachers will also be able to assist students, particularly in our younger grades, in determining their elective beginning Monday as well. Electives will receive a brief comment and assessment on the report card for Term 3. For students who completed the form correctly, we were able to accommodate one of the first three choices on the form. For certain electives that take students off campus, expect a number of field trip forms with a quick turnaround to accommodate offsite activities.

Field Experience Center

As the weather clears and the ground thaws we will be inviting parents to help us get the site ready for the proposed two-day, one-night camps proposed for June. There is a considerable amount of work to be done that includes designing and building some kind of fence to keep grazing cattle off the property. Anyone with expertise in this area, and a willingness to help us get the project started may send me a most welcome email.

Assistant Principal Competition

With Shannon Bennett preparing to assume the role of principal at Connect, we have an opening for an Assistant Principal. The job posting and details are available at connectcharter.ca/careers/. Please share with your social and professional networks.

Admissions Lottery Update for 2023-24

Students entering grade 4 in August 2022 will be the last to be admitted from the waitlist. The waitlist will still be in effect for grades 5 through 9 until this cohort reaches grade 9, at which time the current waitlist will be completely eliminated. Students entering grade 4 in August of 2023, and who are therefore currently in grade 2, will enter a lottery to determine admission order. Information on the lottery process may be found at connectcharter.ca/registration-and-admissions/#lottery

If you have a child whom you wish to be admitted to grade 4 in August 2023 and who has an older sibling currently enrolled at Connect, their name must still be entered in the lottery, however the filtering will automatically place siblings at the top of the admissions list.

From April 15 to May 31, 2022, any parents may enter their grade 2 child’s name into the lottery through a link on the Connect website at www.connectcharter.ca

The lottery will take place in June 2022 and parents will be notified of their child’s placement.

Note: our intake year is grade 4 only.

The lottery process is applicable only for grade 4 entry each year.

Connect Community Garden

We are excited to get the kids back out into the community garden spaces this Spring. To support this work we are seeking any garden tools that you may have lying around. Spades, shovels, cultivators, hoes, any and all are welcome and appreciated. If you have any questions, or ideas about how you might support this important work, please email: [email protected]

Parent Society and School Council

Parent Society AGM  Tuesday Apr 19, 20226:30pm

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 19 when we will hold our Annual General Meeting for the Connect Charter Parent Society. We are in need of new directors for the 2022/2023 school year, and welcome parents or guardians from all grade levels. In the next two years, we will have six directors moving on from Connect, so we especially appreciate representation from younger grade levels.

The Parent Society is responsible for organizing all AGLC related fundraising (casinos, raffles) which accounts for approximately $45k every 18-24 months. These funds are used to purchase items for educational enrichment for all Connect students. Volunteering for Parent Society is a minimal time commitment, but has a huge impact on our school. Please consider getting involved. The Connect Charter Parent Society (CCPS) serves as a separate entity in parallel with the Connect Charter School Council at the direction of the Connect Charter School Board.

Anyone who is interested is welcome to contact Mary Jensen, Parent Society President, at [email protected]
