March 18, 2022 Parent Update

Good afternoon Connect parents;

We have arrived at our much anticipated spring break and now have two weeks to re-energize before school starts again on Monday April 4th. As we continue to emerge from the pandemic haze and get our feet under us once again, we are looking forward to numerous activities in the remaining months of the school year that reflect more completely what the Connect program offers, including: overnight spring trips to the FEC, elective courses, assemblies, in-person social gatherings (see Connect Our Community info below), and even fire drills – who ever thought we would actually look forward to those valuable but annoying interruptions.

New Principal Appointment

I am beyond delighted to follow up on Superintendent Chris Gilmour’s message from Tuesday, announcing the appointment of Shannon Bennett to the position of Connect Charter School Principal, effective August 1st. Having worked with Shannon for the past three years, 2 1/2  of them through a pandemic, I take great comfort in knowing that she will be in the principal’s role and will be supported by Shashi Shergill and the extended school leadership team. Shannon will provide the kind of student-focused and visionary leadership that will guide the school into its next exciting chapter.

Student Tech Over Spring Break

As we have done for the duration of the pandemic, we will be having students bring home their iPads over spring break. This is a precaution in the event that a further coronavirus outbreak or individual positive tests affects student attendance after the break. All devices will be remotely locked down and students will not have access to their apps or internet, with the exception of specific apps, such as Sora, which allows access to books.

Elective courses will begin the week of April 11th. Parents will be receiving an email containing the elective catalogue and a student preference form. Please review the elective options carefully and submit one form per student as a family. We encourage you to submit the forms over the break, however they will be accepted until noon on Tuesday April 5th. The elective choices may be previewed here.

Connect Our Community – Thursday April 21, 2022 3:30-7:30pm

We are eager to reconnect our school community after two years of being physically apart due to the pandemic. On Thursday April 21st from 3:30-7:30pm we will be hosting an open house event dubbed Connect Our Community and invite parents and students to come into the school, view examples of student work, and meet with teachers, support staff, and school administration. We will be asking families to schedule times in advance using the Conference Manager in PowerSchool. More details will be provided following spring break, but please mark your calendars for this important event.

Spring Camps at FEC

The continuing relaxation of pandemic restrictions has permitted planning to proceed for overnight spring camps for all grades. Camps will take place from June 1st to 24th and will consist of a two-day, one-night trip per pod. The final schedule, trip and activity details, volunteer opportunities, and accommodations for students who cannot stay on site overnight will be shared with our parent community by the end of April.

Admissions Lottery Update for 2023-24

Students entering grade 4 in August 2022 will be the last to be admitted from the waitlist. The waitlist will still be in effect for grades 5 through 9 until this cohort reaches grade 9, at which time the current waitlist will be completely eliminated. Students entering grade 4 in August of 2023, and who are therefore currently in grade 2, will enter a lottery to determine admission order. Information on the lottery process may be found at

If you have a child whom you wish to be admitted to grade 4 in August 2023 and who has an older sibling currently enrolled at Connect, their name must still be entered in the lottery, however the filtering will automatically place siblings at the top of the admissions list.

From April 15 to May 31, 2022, any parents may enter their grade 2 child’s name into the lottery through a link on the Connect website at

The lottery will take place in June 2022 and parents will be notified of their child’s placement.

Note: our intake year is grade 4 only.

The lottery process is applicable only for grade 4 entry each year.

Parent Society and School Council

Parent Society AGM  Tuesday Apr 19, 20226:30pm

Mark your calendars for Tuesday, April 19 when we will hold our Annual General Meeting for the Connect Charter Parent Society. We are in need of new directors for the 2022/2023 school year, and welcome parents or guardians from all grade levels. In the next two years, we will have six directors moving on from Connect, so we especially appreciate representation from younger grade levels.

Notice of 2022 AGM and Minutes of 2021 AGM for the Parent Society

The Parent Society is responsible for organizing all AGLC related fundraising (casinos, raffles) which accounts for approximately $45k every 18-24 months. These funds are used to purchase items for educational enrichment for all Connect students. Volunteering for Parent Society is a minimal time commitment, but has a huge impact on our school. Please consider getting involved. The Connect Charter Parent Society (CCPS) serves as a separate entity in parallel with the Connect Charter School Council at the direction of the Connect Charter School Board.

Anyone who is interested is welcome to contact Mary Jensen, Parent Society President, at [email protected]
