Good afternoon Connect parents;
This week’s parent update is coming your way on a Wednesday as our Family Day break is now here and with it the school will be closed for a few days. Classes resume on Tuesday February 22nd.
For those of you who are planning ahead to the May long weekend, you may have noticed that the school calendar is showing a PD Day for May 27th when in past years we have scheduled the May PD day to extend the long weekend for families by having it on the Friday leading into the weekend. At the time the calendar was originally developed we had outdoor trips scheduled for that day but those circumstances have changed and we are able to return the PD day to Friday May 20th. This request will be taken to the Board for approval at their March meeting.
This week is the first time in nearly two years that students have not been required to wear masks in school. In an environment where masks are optional, many have elected to continue wearing masks while others have opted to remove them. Students have been reminded and encouraged to respect the decisions of others in their choice while also being mindful of those who may need to maintain physical distance due to immuno-compromised medical conditions and may therefore have greater degrees of sensitivity to those not wearing masks. It remains important that we continue to speak with students about respectful and empathic behaviour toward each other during this complicated time of transition. Until we are advised otherwise by health authorities, the following measures will remain in place: cohorts, daily screening, staying home when sick, masking when returning from being sick, additional sanitizing, hand hygiene, and mandatory masks for adults.
Masks and Rapid Antigen Tests
With no shortage of irony attached to this, we have received another shipment of Rapid Antigen Tests and student masks from the government. In order to properly prioritize the distribution, we are asking all families to fill in a form to opt-in or opt-out form. You will be able to opt for masks, rapid tests, both, or none. You will receive a link to your parent contact email(s). Please complete the form only once per child.These items will be distributed on Tuesday February 22.
SMS Alerts – Upcoming
Connect is augmenting our emergency communications system with SMS support for mass priority alerts including bus delays, school closures, etc. Please expect an email with instructions early next week. You will need to text a number from your phone to opt in. We are unable to opt in on your behalf, so we appreciate your support opting in.
Parent Society and School Council News
The Annual General Meetings for School Council and Parent Society will take place on April 19th. These critical support organizations rely on parents to take on roles within the executive and director ranks. As children reach the end of grade 9 and parents move on from the school with them, new parents are needed to take over these functions. For more information on Parent Society, contact mary Jensen at [email protected].

Centre for Sexuality: Supporting 2SLGBTQ+ Youth: A Workshop for Parents, Family, and Friends
Family, friends, and parents play an important role in the lives of children and youth who are Two Spirit and LGBTQ+. Research shows that gender and sexually diverse youth experience improved health and wellbeing when supported by the adults in their lives. This workshop will increase participants’ knowledge and awareness of gender and sexual diversity including the differences between sex, gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation. Additionally, through interactive activities participants will have the opportunity to explore their own values and beliefs regarding gender and sexual diversity. Participants will be given practical tools and resources to build comfort and skill in supporting and affirming Two Spirit and LGBTQ+ children and youth.
Terry Fox Run Update
This week I received a letter of thanks from the Terry Fox Foundation indicating that the Connect community raised $1245 during the Terry Fox Run fundraiser in October 2021. Our thanks to everybody who supported this important annual event.
