November 12 – Parent Update

Good afternoon Connect parents;

November 10th marked the second consecutive Remembrance Day assembly that we have conducted virtually as a result of COVID-19 restrictions. With contributions from many students and staff members, a composite of videos reinforced a message of hope and gratitude to the countless people who made the ultimate sacrifice so that we may live in peace.

Volleyball Finals
Our senior girls and boys volleyball teams competed in the final tournaments on Friday November 5th and performed exceptionally well, demonstrating extraordinary citizenship through their camaraderie and conduct, as well as through their skilled play. The grade 9 girls came away with a gold medal, while the grade 8 boys won silver in a tie break. The grade 9 boys finished fourth in a very competitive field. Congratulations to all players and a huge thank you to our coaches: Mr. Cadman, Mr. Ferguson, and Mr. Fong for maintaining a focus on citizenship and fair play.

Parent Vaccine Survey

In hopes of understanding parental decisions around COVID-19 vaccinations for children, Alberta Health Services (AHS) is currently surveying parents with children aged 5 to 11. The brief four question survey asks if parents intend to vaccinate their child when the vaccine becomes available and, if so, how AHS could make the experience positive for their child. The survey is available on the AHS website.

Supporting Students and Families in Need

What we can all agree on related to this pandemic is that it has caused hardship for many. We know that individuals in our own school community have been adversely affected. The notion of extraordinary citizenship extends to all of us and so we wish to reach out to our community to offer our support. Working in partnership with our School Council we are able to offer support and assistance to families in need through a variety of ways. Whether it is help with school lunches, or winter clothing, or other items, we are here to help. Please be assured that all requests will be treated confidentially. Please reach out to me at the school [email protected] to discuss your needs.

Provincial Achievement Tests (PATs)

Grade 6 and 9 students will be participating in Provincial Achievement Tests in the spring as part of Alberta Education’s return to province-wide assessment. The tests are provincially mandated but schools have a window of time in which to schedule administration of the tests. As PATs represent a glimpse into a student’s knowledge and skills based on specific learning outcomes, the scores are one dimension of assessment and are  interpreted as such to be  blended into overall student assessment for the school year.

The dates for PATs are as follows:

Grade 6

May 18 ELA Part A

June 13 Science

June 14 ELA

June 15 Social

June 16 Math (part A and B)

Grade 9

May 16 ELA Part A
