October 29, 2021 – Parent Update

Good afternoon Connect parents;

It may soon be a fading memory that students were practicing their ukulele tunes under the warm fall skies and glorious colours of Clem’s Garden. The first taste of winter will be upon us this weekend, with the promise of clear skies and cool temperatures to follow next week. It is a timely opportunity to remind ourselves that students need to be prepared for a variety of weather in the course of a day and boots, gloves, toques, and parkas need to become part of their wardrobe while waiting for school buses or while outside for recess, phys ed, DPA or other school activities. Children should not be left unattended while waiting for a school bus if the weather is cold – unexpected delays may result in students waiting longer than usual in cold or inclement weather. As an added precaution, you can download the MyBusStop app and use the school code: CSCR1A9YTT to receive notifications when buses are delayed. On a related note, our custodial staff would be most appreciative if students have a pair of indoor shoes to change into when they come in from morning or lunch recess. With wet, snowy weather in our future, the mess created by 624 pairs of feet in our hallways can be excessive. Thank you in advance for your understanding.

As you will see below, the senior volleyball season is wrapping up, and normally this would signal a transition to basketball. The Calgary Alternative Athletic Association (CAAA) governs league play and is currently considering options for the upcoming basketball season that take into consideration ongoing COVID-19 restrictions in schools as well as the complication of not being able to use private facilities for tournaments as they are required to ask for proof of vaccination from all patrons aged 12 and up and yet schools are not permitted to ask students for proof of vaccination under any circumstances. Additionally, this condition creates a requirement that players be vaccinated and vaccination is not a requirement to participate in team sports at Connect. Confusing?  You bet… but we’re working through the ever evolving protocols and thank students and parents for your patience as we do so. The CAAA will be meeting with all Athletic Directors within the next couple of weeks and will advise schools of how future extracurricular sports will be managed at that time.

XC Ski Volunteer Opportunity

We are looking forward to getting our students on cross country skis during their time at the Field Experience Centre this winter. If any parents have the time and expertise to wax and tune up skis, we would appreciate some assistance to get our 70+ pairs of skis ready for use. If you are able to help, please contact John Cadman at [email protected].

COVID Protocols and Extracurricular Sports As we continue to reintroduce extracurricular sports for grade 8 and 9 students, we have found it necessary to revisit some COVID-19 protocols in light of the nature of team sports and the proximity of players to each other during games and tournaments.  At present we only have senior teams (grades 8 and 9) registered for extracurricular sports with the CAAA as their access to the COVID vaccine makes them the least vulnerable of our student population. Even so, we are requiring that certain safety precautions be adhered to as follows:

  • With parental permission students in grades 7 to 9 may play/practice without a mask and can have their masks off when actively eating or drinking during games or practices.
  • Students are required to wear masks when on the bench, hallways, classrooms or any other indoor common areas.
  • Students representing teams from other schools are required to follow Connect’s mask policy, and our students, when playing at other schools, must adhere to the mask policy of schools they are visiting.
