Good afternoon Connect parents;
It has been a busy week at Connect with the grade 9’s, 6’s, and 5’s all venturing out to the Field Experience Centre to establish their first connection to the land and the natural beauty of this very special place. Our fall camps will wrap up next week with one more grade 5 day on Monday and the grade 4’s on Tuesday and Wednesday. There has been a tremendous amount of work partially or fully completed at the FEC to prepare it for year round use, but many tasks, large and small, remain to be done, including cleaning and organizing some spaces, a little drywall plastering, installing paper towel and soap dispensers, fall clean up of the grounds, and replacement of some of the baseboards in the washrooms of the dining hall. We are looking at the possibility of a fall work bee on Saturday October 2nd to tackle some of these jobs and will have more information coming your way once we can confirm this date.
Our extracurricular sports program launched with Cross Country Running, and with over 60 students registered, our training sessions required some planning and precision, all made possible thanks to the 7 staff members who have taken on various coaching responsibilities. The first XC race took place on Wednesday at Ecole de la Source School and our team did exceptionally well on several fronts. Not only did team members demonstrate outstanding running technique to win several race categories, but they also showed extraordinary citizenship in their support of one another and other teams at the event.
Senior volleyball teams also began practicing this week for grade 8 and 9 students. A tournament schedule is still being worked out with the latest public health measures in mind and information will be sent to the parents of all volleyball players as soon as it is known. We are also hoping to start intramural sports after fall break for grades 4-7, however this too will depend on health regulations that may restrict such activities to cohort groups only. More information on intramurals and clubs will be included in an update following fall break.
Speaking of fall break, our last day of classes will be Friday October 8th and school will reopen on Monday October 18th. Prior to the break are Parent – Teacher conferences from 4:30-8pm on Tuesday October 5th and 8am-1pm on Wednesday October 6th. The conferences will be virtual and parents will be sent information on signing up for a time in the next update. A Google Meet link will be sent by homeroom teachers shortly before the conferences begin.
On September 15th, the Alberta government introduced revised measures to address the COVID-19 public health crisis. The 2021-22 School Start-Up Plan for Connect had already incorporated the new requirements for mandatory masking and cohorting of students in grades 4-6 and therefore our procedures do not need further revision at this time. We strongly encourage parents to inform the school office or administration of any student who tests positive for COVID-19. Although no contact tracing will take place and no quarantines will be required of other students, we will notify parents of the affected students’ classmates so they can be more diligent in monitoring for symptoms and having their child tested if necessary.
AHS has repeatedly stated that vaccines are the path out of the pandemic, and I am certain many of you have taken advantage of the opportunity to have your child vaccinated if they were born in 2009 or earlier. For those who have not, and who wish to access a first or second shot, the COVID-19 immunization clinic will take place on Tuesday Sept. 21st at the school. We encourage everyone over the age of 12 years to get vaccinated as a further measure to keep our school community safe and healthy.
If you wish your child to be vaccinated against COVID-19, complete and sign the consent form that was sent home on Sept. 7th, or print, complete and sign the attached PDF version, and return it to your child’s homeroom teacher. All consent forms will be retained in the office and will be given directly to our public health nurse, who will oversee the vaccination team during the clinic at the school. More information is available at www.albertahealthservices.ca/assets/info/ppih/if-ppih-covid-19-sch-school-imm-during-covid.pdf.
If your child has already received two vaccinations, please accept our thanks and disregard this request.
Further directives may be forthcoming from AHS or Alberta Education. If and when those are available the information will be shared with you at the earliest opportunity.
Truth and Reconciliation Day – September 30th
The Connect Charter School Board of Directors met on Tuesday Sept. 14th and passed a motion to amend the school calendar, resulting in a change that will close the school on Thursday September 30th for National Truth and Reconciliation Day. More information will be coming from grade level teachers with details of activities classes will be undertaking for this important reflective occasion.
In order to maintain our instructional days for the school year, the non-instructional day scheduled for June 6th, 2022 will now be a regular school day.
Terry Fox Run – Monday October 4th
This year’s Terry Fox Run will take place at North Glenmore Park on Monday October 4th and will consist of three runs: grade 4-5 at 9:30; grade 6-7 at 10:40; and grades 8-9 at 1:30. Each group will walk from the school to the start/finish area 30 minutes before the start time with one grade using 34th St. and 66th Ave. and the other 58th Ave. and 37th St. to maintain cohorts and distancing. More information will be in next week’s update on volunteer requirements for these runs.

Connect Charter Casino November 21 & 22
The Connect Charter Parent Society is excited to announce our next casino taking place on November 21 & 22, 2021 at the Elbow River Casino. After a lot of delays and cancellations due to Covid, this will be our first casino since 2018. The casino is the single biggest fundraiser for the school and the funds raised help to support many outdoor experiences as well as purchase items essential to the enhancement of student learning.
We require about 40 parent volunteers to successfully run the casino and are hoping for strong support from our parent community. Sign up opportunities will be posted on Better Impact shortly. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Sandra Steinbach-Kane of the Parent Society at [email protected].
Thank you so much in advance for your support.

…is back & we’re looking forward to a great year of lunches & snacks!
The Fun Lunch program will be commencing for the school year beginning October 20, 2021 for Term 1, pending any further health restrictions that may be in effect at that time. We would like to thank you for your patience and we look forward to once again continuing this important School Council fundraising project. Fun Lunch raises approximately $28 000 per school year and proceeds from this program go directly to supporting the purchase of priority items for the students, staff & school.
A backpack letter should have come home with your student last week with details about the Term 1 fun lunches and snacks. Once again, the HotLunches.netwebsite will be used to place and manage orders. Everyone will need to create a new account for the 2021/2022 school year for your student(s). The instructions to create an account are available on the back side of the backpack letter, which is also attached here. If you require any assistance please feel free to contact us at [email protected].
Fun Lunch is completely run by parent volunteers and if you would like to get involved please email us at [email protected].
