February 28 Update

Pink Shirt Day at Connect Charter, February 24, 2021. 

Good afternoon Connect parents;

It’s hard to believe we are into the last week of February with only 3 weeks of school remaining before spring break. Term 2 will end on March 12th and report cards will be available to you in PowerSchool at 4pm on Monday March 15th. Student-led Conferences will take place on Thursday March 18th from 4 to 8pm and Friday March 19th from 8am to 1pm. The format and schedule for conferences will be included in the next update. 

Wednesday February 24th was Pink Shirt Day, an opportunity for our school to demonstrate our solidarity to stand up to bullying. It was wonderful to see such a commitment in the sea of pink shirts at Connect. On Wednesday February 24th, School Council hosted a webinar featuring Dr. Brent Macdonald and The Path Forward, an interactive Q & A session that addressed the many questions and concerns of parents as the pandemic reaches the one year mark amid some indications that variants may result in a renewed wave of COVID-19 cases. Registration for the next school year will open on Tuesday April 6th. Important information on registration procedures is contained below. Please ensure you are familiar with the instructions and are able to access your account.  

Registration for 2021-2022

REGISTRATION for 2021-2022 school year: APRIL 6-15, 2021

Registration for new and returning students will open Tuesday April 6 2021, and close Thursday April 15 2021.

Re-Registration is completed using your PowerSchool Parent Account.

Please confirm your login information ahead of time to avoid registration delays and frustration. 

Reminder – each parent may have their own parent account and student-specific access codes are required.

Tuesday, April 6 – Registration Opens

Thursday, April 15 – Registration Closes

Thursday, April 15 – Early Bird bussing registration deadline.

After this date, the transportation fee will increase by $100.

 

Bus route planning begins as soon as registration closes – late registrations may not be included in the planning of the bus routes and some bus routes may fill up quickly.

After April 15 2021, the waitlist is consulted to fill empty spots for all grades.

Please let the school office know – IN WRITING if your child is NOT returning to Connect Charter School for the next school year. (current grade 4 – 8)

The CONNECT Board of Directors set the following school fees for the 2020-2021 school year. Fees for 2021-2022 are TBD. They will be confirmed by the end of March 2021.

Enrichment $615

Lunchroom Supervision $50

Transportation after April 15 deadline $900

PLEASE NOTE: Registration is not considered complete until school fees are paid or you have contacted Laurie Kangas in the school office to make arrangements for payment. If you have contacted the office to make payment arrangements by the April 15 deadline, you will receive the early bird transportation fee ($800).

We have a bursary program available to families who require assistance with paying school fees. Please contact school administration if you need to apply for a bursary and/or to find out what documentation is required. All inquiries and payment arrangements are confidential.

KeeBo Registration for Term 3

Registration for KeeBo, our online learning program is now open for Term 3.  Any students who are currently attending on campus learning and want to switch to online learning in Term 3 please use the attached google form link to register. Please note Term 3 begins on March 15.

Connect Charter School invites applications for the position of Secretary-Treasurer

Applications are invited for the position of Secretary-Treasurer (Chief Financial Officer) for Connect Charter School, located in Calgary, Alberta. This is a Full Time position of employment, with duties beginning in April. The exact start date is flexible.

The School

Connect Charter School is a dynamic, innovative and publicly funded charter school settled in the beautiful community of Lakeview in South- West Calgary. The school enrolls 624 students in grades 4-9 and has an annual operating budget of approximately $6.0 million. Connect Charter School employs 50 staff, including teachers, support staff and administration. Connect is governed by a board of directors.

The Position

Reporting to the Superintendent of Schools, the Secretary-Treasurer has supervisory oversight for the areas of finance, budgeting (capital and operational), payroll and employee benefits programs and transportation. In addition, the Secretary-Treasurer serves as Corporate Secretary for the Board. Salary range is between $85,000-$100,000 depending on education and experience. A health benefits package is also included.

The Candidate

The Society is seeking a highly competent administrator who is passionate about learning, works well in a collaborative team setting, is committed to providing excellent client service, and possesses exemplary skills in leadership and communication. The successful candidate will also possess the ability to maximize technology and financial management software to facilitate effective decision making. Preference will be given to candidates who have an accounting designation and successful senior level financial management experience, ideally in a school setting.

Parent Society AGM Info 

As we begin preparing for the April AGM for Parent Society we are in need of new directors for the 2021/2022 school year, especially representation from our younger grade levels. All parents/guardians of Connect students are members of Parent Society. The Parent Society is responsible for organizing all AGLC related fundraising which accounts for approximately $65k every 18-24 months. These funds are used to purchase items for educational enrichment for Connect students. Additionally, these funds assist the Grade 9 and Agents of Change trips. During the pandemic we have approved the purchase of outdoor foam seating for every student, 4 table tennis tables, DPA equipment for every classroom, snowshoes and additional 2 way radios to assist with outdoor education opportunities. Volunteering for Parent Society is a minimal time commitment, but has a huge impact on our school community. We meet approximately 5-6 times during the school year and coordinate our meetings with School Council meetings for ease of attendance. Please consider getting involved. Details of our spring outdoor activities are under development and will be shared out prior to spring break. We are committed to providing an outdoor experience for our students that is meaningful and engaging while still conforming to all public health requirements. Stay tuned…
