Good afternoon Connect parents;
If you look out your window today you may notice that winter has returned to Calgary. In the era of COVID-19 this elevates the possibility of exposure to the virus as we will spend more time indoors and in close proximity to other people. Alberta is already experiencing an alarming spike in COVID-19 cases, and more than at any time since the pandemic began we must redouble our efforts to take precautions and reinforce measures that limit spread of the virus and clearly address the steps to be taken if a positive case emerges or an individual has been in contact with a positive case. To reiterate our core message…our school is committed to the health and safety of our students, staff, and families; it is essential that the commitment is reciprocated by all of you taking necessary precautions to ensure the virus does not enter the school.
In addition to our established protocols of mandatory masks inside the school, hand hygiene, physical distancing, no visitors, and strict adherence to cohorts within the school, Alberta Health Services has added further restrictions in an effort to reverse the current trend:
- Students are to be limited to no more than 3 cohorts – their immediate family, a school class, and one sport or social cohort;
- A mandatory limit on indoor and outdoor social and family gatherings to a maximum of 15 people is now in effect and social gatherings in private homes in Calgary and Edmonton are to stop;
- Further details on these new restrictions may be found at: www.alberta.ca/restrictions-on-gatherings.aspx#Cohort_groups.
In addition to these AHS guidelines, Health Canada recently updated their recommendations for cloth masks. The latest information on mask materials and how they should be constructed is available at:
Additionally, here is a link to an article on re-usable cloth bags that make a suitable, washable filter:
As COVID-19 drags on, it is understandable that degrees of fatigue set in…we are, after all, a species that thrives on self-determination. Unfortunately we must constantly revisit the critical importance of the measures that are in place to protect all of us… and this is abundantly true among our older students. To those who are diligent about wearing masks, maintaining distance, and sticking to their cohort, we are extremely grateful. Recently, however, some grade 4’s, in a conversation with their teacher, expressed their genuine concern for the well being of grade 8 and 9 students who removed their masks on the bus to and from school. I cannot express strongly enough how much we need parent support to reinforce the need for ALL students to adhere to the established precautions; they are not arbitrary rules created to make adolescent lives miserable, but are solely intended to keep us all healthy. Thank you in advance for taking the time to review the expectations with your child.
Remembrance Day Ceremony
Mrs. Melville and Mr. Bolen have developed a virtual Remembrance Day ceremony that all students will participate in within their cohorts on Tuesday Nov. 10th beginning at 10:45am. The link to the recording is below. Although it is unfortunate we cannot gather our community together for this important event, this truly is the next best thing.
Please note that Wednesday November 11th is a non-instructional day due to Remembrance Day. Classes will resume on Thursday November 12th.
Based on feedback received from parents we are introducing an important change to the KeeBo online learning program. Rather than requiring students who register for KeeBo now to remain in the program until the end of the school year without the possibility of transitioning back into in-school classes at the end of Term 2 in March, we are opening up the opportunity for current or prospective students to register for KeeBo for Term 2 ONLY and reserve the right to shift back to in-school programming during the Term 2 to 3 switch. With this in mind, the deadline for KeeBo registration has been extended by one more day to 4pm on Tuesday November 10th. Further information may be found at:
