August 21 Update

Good afternoon Connect parents;

Our second day of re-entry is now complete and the excitement of the grade 5 and 6 students to be back in school was matched by the enthusiasm with which the staff greeted them this morning. The staggered entry strategy is providing us with ample opportunity to make sure students understand new procedures and ways of moving around the building and grounds. Over the next few days you will be receiving further information on upcoming events including Meet the Teacher activities on August 27th and a full day outdoor learning opportunity at Camp River Edge for each grade. Following are a few items that are of more immediate concern:

Grade 4 first day and parent welcome – August 21, 2020

Our new grade 4 students will be arriving on Monday morning and our staff will be outside in force to welcome them to Connect and to make sure they find their homeroom teacher and cohort. There will also be a brief welcome meeting for grade 4 parents on the field after the students have entered the building. No parents will be permitted to enter the school to escort students to class. 

First day for all students – drop off and pick zones

We will welcome all our students attending classes in school on Tuesday August 25th. This will be the first real test of drop off/pick up procedures and monitoring of student movement, staggered breaks, and physical distancing measures. Parents driving students to and from school are reminded that the drop off/pick up zone is the east side of 34th St adjacent to the school grounds. Please be patient and limit phone calls to the office – our front office staff will be very busy that day.

Outdoor Learning Spaces – tent set up

We are currently going through the final steps of the approval process to set up our tents as outdoor learning spaces. In anticipation of having the approval by Monday we are once again asking for 6-8 volunteers to help us with the set up from 1-4pm on Monday.  No security clearance is required, however volunteers do need to be wearing a face mask and should bring work gloves. Additionally, all volunteers need to complete the COVID-19 Daily Screening Tool at before arriving at the school. If you are able to help out, please email me at [email protected]. Note that the tent set up may need to be further postponed if there is a delay in permit processing. Volunteers should check their email Monday before coming to the school for a status update.

A reminder to all parents that the COVID-19 Daily Screening Tool needs to be completed every school day. If you are unsure of the procedure, please revisit the many previous emails and updates that outlined the process.

Staff reassignments

First of all I would like to virtually introduce all of you to Lori Hitchcock, our new Receptionist/Office Assistant. Lori will be the first person you will often connect with when calling the school. Welcome to the team Lori.

As a result of our need to support the KeeBo online learning program, there has been some shuffling of staff assignments:

  • Louis Cheng, Margaret Leland, and Erin Piper will be teaching and supporting within the KeeBo program;
  • Erin Piper will also be providing support to students with complex needs requiring an Individualized Program Plan;
  • Brittney MacDonald will be temporarily reassigned to teach grade 5 Humanities for the 5.1/5.2 pod;
  • Emily McDonald will be assigned to teach Math/Science in 4.1-4.2;
  • Ranee Drader will  be teaching Math/ Science in 4.3-4.4 while Kevin Sonico is on secondment to Mount Royal University until November.

Thank you for all your support. We have had a truly amazing week and it has been incredible to see some of you outside in the morning and to have a conversation that doesn’t involve zoom. Have an outstanding weekend.
