My name is Natalie G. and I am humbled and honoured to be on the Calgary Foundations Student Council.
The Calgary Foundation works to build a strong and sustainable charitable sector that serves the current and emerging needs of the community for the long-term benefit of Calgary and the surrounding area.
Each year since 2007, the Calgary Foundation has published Calgary’s Vital Signs. This is a report that features expert research combined with the results of a citizen survey where Calgarians weigh in on areas critical to the quality of life.
Some of the vital signs included:
- Senior Citizens
- Poverty
- Mental Health
As a member of the student council, our goal was to identify a topic for further exploration. There were many interesting observations and great ideas for further discussion. Many of the ideas intersected. However, as we came to a close in our discussion, we generated our focus topic for the year: Poverty in Calgary and Area. Some of our next steps include:
- Generate questions regarding poverty
- Reaching out to charities
- Volunteer work
I am proud to say that I am representing Connect Charter School. This is an incredible opportunity. I cannot wait to see the year progress for the Calgary Foundation and see the amazing accomplishments of the Student Council.
